(WMC-TV) – A crash on I-240 early Friday morning sent one person to the hospital and now investigators are trying to figure out why one driver was traveling the wrong way on the interstate.

Rescue crews were pressed into work on Interstate 240 at South Perkins at 3:17 Friday morning.

Investigators say the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta was headed eastbound in a westbound lane of traffic.

The Jetta eventually smashed head-on into a large, commercial grade Ford truck that was heading westbound.

The driver of the Jetta was rushed to the Med and listed in critical condition.

The driver of the truck was issued tickets for not having proof of insurance and for a registration violation.

The 36-year-old Jetta driver has yet to be cited because of his injuries, according to police.

At this point in the investigation, police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
