(WMC-TV) - 22-year-old Marie Pachecano and her boyfriend, Juan Carlos Sanchez, claim what happened to her daughter was an accident as they were taken from Memphis back to Calhoun County, Mississippi.
The couple was arrested Friday morning at LeBonheur Children's Hospital hours after 4 year-old Juliette Pachecano arrived via helicopter suffering a gunshot wound.
"A gunshot to her left cheek," said Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan.
The sheriff said she was shot with a .22 caliber handgun. He told Action News 5 the child's mother and boyfriend initially told 911 dispatchers the girl had fallen from a bed and hit her head inside their home in rural Vardaman, Mississippi..
"I received the call around 4 or 5 this morning from a social worker at LeBonheur," said Pollan.
Pachecano and Sanchez were later arrested by Shelby County Sheriff's deputies and awaited the arrival of Calhoun County officials at 201 Poplar. That's where the little girl's grandfather also waited. He claimed it was all an accident as well.
"Accidente," he told us.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what really happened.
"Until we interview them and talk to the witnesses I can't answer that," said Sheriff Pollan.
The 4 year-old girl was pronounced dead around the time her mother and boyfriend were on their way to jail.
The sheriff plans to meet with the district attorney first thing Monday morning. Murder charges are possible.
