Police search for serial rapist

(WMC-TV) - Residents in the Carrollwood Lakes subdivision in Cordova learned Saturday that the Memphis Police sex crimes bureau is searching for a serial rapist.

Helen Herbers, a resident of Cordova, is on guard.

"It kind of frightens me to hear that news and it's been going on that period of time," Herbers said.

According to investigators, recently obtained DNA evidence connects six sexual assaults to the same individual.  Some of the assaults date back nearly a decade.

The suspect is a white man, about 5'10" to 6'2" tall, weighing between 180 and 200 pounds, with brown hair, medium complexion, and a chin curtain style beard.  He was caught on camera using a stolen credit card around various Cordova locations.

In June 2010, police responded to a call of a 28-year-old woman who claimed she had been raped and robbed at knife point in the 2300 block of Oak Springs.

Many Carrollwood neighbors, like Shatana Moore, were disturbed by the news.

"I had an attempted break-in back in 2010...someone tried to pry open my garage and this kind of puts a whole new spin on it.  It's actually pretty terrifying," Moore stated.

Herbers says her young granddaughters visit frequently and just last week she also had an attempted break-in.

"We noticed when we got home that night that someone had tried to force one of the back windows open.  It scared us and we got an alarm since shortly after that," says Herbers.

Now on high alert, neighbors say they'll be watching

Moore said, "If you see anyone around that you don't recognize or who might look suspicious, pick up the phone and call someone."

Another Cordova resident Rick George said, "If he wants to come around here, let him come.  We have a couple of guys who'd like to meet him."

Anyone with information regarding these crimes is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH (2274).
