(WMC-TV) - A bizarre murder for hire plot involving a doctor is unfolding in Greenwood, Mississippi.
The arrests of 70 year old Dr. Arnold Smith and 54 year old William Paul Muller has stunned many Greenwood residents. Dr. Smith, an Oncologist in Greenwood, and Muller were arrested this morning and charged with plotting to kill Greenwood attorney Lee Abraham after a shoot out in the attorney's law office.
"Normally you don't hear about this type of stuff happening in Greenwood, so initially when we heard about it everyone was like surely not. This is crazy," said Greenwood resident Walker Kimes.
Dr. Smith is charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder for plotting to kill Greenwood attorney Lee Abraham. Muller is being held for questioning.
Detective Sergeant Jeff Byars, with Greenwood Police, says the crime happened during an attempted robbery at this law office.
Authorities say a federal agent was also wounded during the incident.
Sunday investigators were busy at the Abraham law firm and Dr. Smith's home in search of evidence.
Neighbors say Dr. Smith has had a grudge against Abraham ever since the lawyer represented Smith's ex-wife in a divorce case in the 1990s.
"I know that his wife had alleged that he had done something to her and Lee Abraham was the attorney for a little while. Then supposedly he lost a lot of money from it, Dr. Smith did, and so I think that had something to do with it," said Kimes.
Both Muller and Dr. Smith were arrested by the attorney general's office. Muller is a Morgan City brick mason.
Smith is being held without bond at the Leflore County Jail.
