MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – A late Sunday night stroll turned violent for a North Mississippi couple when they were brutally attacked by a group of men.
It was a romantic, late night walk along the river for the couple from Batesville, Mississippi, until they were rushed by four men around 11:30. They were in the process of taking pictures when they were attacked.
"They just came behind us, pushed us to the ground, took what we had, and hit us," the victims say.
Police said the four suspects took everything the couple had on them, beating them in the process with a tire iron, and kicking and hitting them. The woman has bruises on her legs. The swelling to her eye is going down. Her boyfriend has bruises on his back.
"They hit us with a pipe and they had sticks and things. One had a gun," says one of the victims.
Jaquaveus Prefre, Deshawn Ford, and Dontavius Richard are charged with the crime. The fourth suspect is a juvenile. Their car was spotted by police shortly after the robbery.
When the officers pulled the suspect's vehicle over they saw stolen property scattered through the car, including the stolen cell phones. The officers then called the stolen phones, and they started ringing. The victim says this offers some comedic relief in a scary crime.
"I was going to turn the phone off, but I didn't. I just waited for a while," the victim says.
By waiting, she helped catch the suspects red handed.
The victims' credit cards and drivers' licenses were also found in the suspect's car. The three adult suspects are each charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.
