Occupy Memphis urges protesters to join May Day rallies

(WMC-TV) - Occupy protesters in Memphis and across the country are calling for a worldwide strike.

The event is called May Day, and protesters are encouraged to take off from work, school, and other activities concerning commerce.

Their goal is to come to the Civic Center Plaza in downtown Memphis for a march.

Demonstrations are set to start at 1 p.m. Tuesday and last throughout the afternoon.

Unlike some parts of the country where the Occupy movement has gotten out of hand, protesters in Memphis have been relatively peaceful.  There have been no mass arrests or violence.

Beginning at 1 p.m., there will be a rally in front of 201 Poplar to protest a new state law making it illegal to sleep on state owned property.

Protesters will then meet at the corner of Union Avenue and Manassas Street.  They will then march to the Civic Center Plaza where they will hold a People's City Council meeting.
