Men arrested for 'raising donations' for club in which they do not belong

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police say they caught two young men raising cash for an athletic organization to which neither of them belonged.

Gregory Dees, 18, and Reginald Jenkins, 21, were arrested for soliciting donations on behalf of a Minnesota-based basketball league, in which they have no affiliation.

According to court records, the pair busted at Bahama Breeze near Wolfchase Galleria, collected nearly $100 under false pretenses before the restaurant manager called police.

In order to protect yourself from giving money to people who are raising donation under false pretenses, police suggest asking solicitors for official documentation when approached, including a permit to solicit.
