Family of murdered MTSU basketball player says justice served

(WMC-TV) - The family of a murdered Memphis woman and Middle Tennessee State University basketball players shared happy memories just days after he roommate was convicted in her murder.

From the panicked emergency phone calls to the painful testimony, Tina Stewart's family had to relive her murder in court.

Stewart's parents called her a jokester and the life of the family.  Her mother said this past Mother's Day was especially difficult without her daughter.

Family members said every day is a struggle, but they said justice came when Shanterica Madden was convicted of second-degree murder for Stewart's death.

"It was like a peace that came over my heart, to know that she will finally be off the streets for that horrific thing she did to my child," said Ida Stewart Jackson, Tina Stewart's mother.

Madden will be sentenced in July.

Meanwhile, Stewart's father said he is organizing a basketball classic.  He said he plans to invite her high school and college teammates to play in the game in memory of his daughter.
