West Memphis standoff situation linked to murder two weeks ago

(WMC-TV) – A police standoff situation in West Memphis, Arkansas that shut down a neighborhood ends with the escape of a murder suspect. Chopper 5 was over this breaking situation before police deemed their flight too dangerous.

West Memphis police were ready to take in a murder suspect Tuesday night, but police say he managed to escape through the back door just minutes before they surrounded the apartment he was in.

Where West Memphis police were concerned, they were in a standoff with a murder suspect.

With a blast police forced open the door. The ones that followed were gas grenades.

"They were beating on the door telling them to come out and everything. They were down with the sniper rifle," said 13-year-old witness Diarrus Carter.

Police were searching for murder suspect Eddie Tribble. His mother paced the street in front of her house where her son was thought to be. He's accused of shooting Devario Smith to death two weeks ago at The Good Lyfe, a West Memphis bar. A sign hangs there now saying the violence must end.

"We shouldn't be around this stuff, they shouldn't do this," Carter said.

Residents say this is just the latest feuding between the east and west sides of West Memphis, a conflict that has been going on for decades, passed down through families.

"Over and over again ask me how many people have been killed because of it. I don't know. It's been some," said one resident who gave his name only as Stan.

It's continued violence even the youngest residents see. One little girl worries it will ruin her summer. She begs them to stop.

"Fighting and fussing and arguing and shooting," she said.

Chief Donald Oakes says since the murder two weeks ago there have been more shootings as a result, and they need to find suspect Eddie Tribble before it breaks out again.
