(WMC-TV) – More than a dozen customers taken hostage during a robbery are grateful the armed men who stormed a Collierville Walgreens are in custody.
Fortunately, three male suspects and a female getaway driver did not get far after police say they robbed the store where customers and employees were forced at gunpoint to lie on the floor.
It may be a crime more common in the city, but not unheard of in the suburbs.
Collierville Police say three armed men and woman robbed a Walgreens store around 10 o'clock Monday night near the always busy intersection of Poplar Avenue and Byhalia Road.
"Type of world we live in these days, I mean, people will do anything. You never know, even in Collierville," said customer Charisse Lofties.
A customer who was inside the store at the time of the crime, said men in ski masks forced more than a dozen customers to lie on the floor in the area near the photo department. One of the robbers apparently raided the safe.
The witness said several young female customers cried uncontrollably throughout the frightening ordeal.
"There are still a lot of things about this case that are under investigation," Lt. Philip Arnold said.
Lt. Arnold could only confirm the robbery occurred during store hours, and that officers quickly apprehended the suspects before they even left the parking lot.
Their mug shots are not yet available, but all are in their 20's, and Collierville Police say all are from Memphis.
"No one was hurt which is a huge bonus for us. In a crime of this magnitude that no one was hurt is surprising," Lt. Arnold said.
The suspects are currently charged with aggravated robbery, but additional charges are pending.
Police here are sharing their information with surrounding agencies to see if these suspects may be responsible for other armed robberies. At least two of them have criminal records in Memphis.
