Memphis police officer hurt while helping dog

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer is recovering after she took a hard spill trying to help a dog in need.

Officials said the officer spotted the dog in a drainage ditch on McLean and Edward around 10:15 Monday night.

When the officer tried to help, she fell 15 feet into the ditch and hit her head.

She was able to radio for help and was saved by one of the rescue units scheduled to be taken out of service by budget cuts.

The officer was treated on the scene and is expected to be OK.  Her name has not been released.

Meanwhile, police said the dog ran away and has not been found.
