(WMC-TV) - An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a woman near a downtown Memphis church.

Police arrested Michael Mullins, 50, on Poplar Avenue Thursday. He is charged with first degree murder.

Gwendowlyn Jackson, 67, was found dead of an apparent head injury near St. Mary's Catholic Church Wednesday morning.

Church employees say Jackson was homeless, but very religious and never seen without her bible.

When they found her dead on the church stoop, Father Eric Peterson said her bible was laying near her feet.

Father Peterson said Jackson had just lined up a job and was about to turn her life around.

A wreath hangs at the church where she was found and a cross hangs in her honor overlooking the soup kitchen area.
