Flag ceremony held to remember infant shot by 2-year-old brother

(WMC-TV) – A solemn ceremony was held Thursday to remember a child who recently lost her life at the hands of her 2-year-old brother.

The Child Advocacy Center in Memphis held a symbolic ceremony of raising the flag in memory of Calvuna Reese.

Calvuna was killed when her 2-year-old brother found a loaded gun under the couch in their family's home. She was shot in the head. A family member has since been charged in the case.

Leaders call Thursday's raising of the flag a call to action.

"It's not a pleasant time, but it does help us as adults to realize that a child's safety is our responsibility. And that until we don't have to raise flags anymore, we will continue to let all of us in the community know it's our responsibility to keep kids safe," said Nancy Williams, Child Advocacy Center.

After the flag was raised, there was a moment of silence to remember Calvuna.

Organizers asked the community to their part and stop neglect before it ends in tragedy.
