(WMC-TV) - Binito Martinez, 31 is accused of stabbing his two young nieces and their mother who lived in an apartment with him and the girls' grandmother.
"The lady was hanging out the window saying help me help me," said Shun Vowdery, who lives in nearby.
That lady calling for help was the grandmother. Her son is said to have a long history of mental illness. Neighbors at the Eastwood Park Apartments on Getwell say the family told them about his troubles just in case something ever happened.
"We aren't sure the extent of his mental condition but officers do have him in custody," said Major Roderick Cunningham of the Memphis Police Department. "We got him in custody without incident."
Martinez' sister says she warned their mother that something like this could happen and that he needed to move out of the house where the girls, ages 7 and 8, live with his sister-in-law. The sister spoke to us asking that we not show her face.
"He needs to go back to the hospital," said the man's sister, who did not want to be identified. "My mother didn't understand that because she has a motherly love of course."
Neighbors said they were also concerned about Martinez because of his erratic behavior in the past.
"I'm heartbroken because I saw the first one they brought out on the stretcher with blood everywhere," said Vowdery.
Both girls were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Their mother suffered a laceration across her forehead.
All three victims are in non-critical condition at LeBonheur Children's Hospital and the Med. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Martinez is charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault DV.
