KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pat Summitt, women's basketball coach emeritus at the University of Tennessee, has won the 2012 Global ATHENA Leadership Award.

The honor recognizes professional excellence, service to the community and active help to women in realizing their full leadership potential. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is among the previous winners.

In a news release Thursday from ATHENA International, Summitt was described as "courageous and strong, the champion of enlightenment, the bearer of wisdom, harmony and beauty to all."

Summitt has early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type, and stepped down as Lady Vols coach after this past season. With 1,098 wins, she is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history.
