Chinese couple file appeal in custody fight

A Chinese couple who lost claim to a five-year-old girl in Memphis court ruling last week began the appeal process. Jack and Casey He filed notice of appeal in Shelby County Chancery Court Thursday. The case now goes to the state Court of Appeals in Jackson The Hes claim they were denied due process because they didn't understand the consequences of giving custody of their then- newborn to Jerry and Louise Baker. Last Wednesday, Judge Robert Childers issued an order terminating the Hes' parental rights and awarding permanent custody of the child to the Bakers.

Here's what will happen next. The Court of Appeals will consider the Hes' appeal. A court must also decide who will pay for Anna Mae He's legal bill. And since Jack and Casey He lost their custody fight, they now face deportation, even though all of their kids are U-S citizens.
