Memphis son arrested for his own fathers death

(WMC-TV) -While many families took the day to celebrate Father's Day with their dads, one family won't get that opportunity anymore after their own son decided to take his father's life.

"It's a pretty quiet neighborhood and we don't see this type of stuff around here, so it's shocking," said neighbor Josh Campbell.

That's how Campbell described what he calls a senseless killing in his Germantown neighborhood.

Alexander Shelton, 24, is charged with murdering his father, 55-year-old Lauren Shelton.

It happened around 3:45 Saturday afternoon in the 6700 Block of Paperbirch Cove.

Lauren Shelton's wife discovered him dead on the living room sofa.  He was lying on the couch, unresponsive with severe head trauma

"It's unfortunate that it is Father's Day and you have this kind of situation happen.  That's kind of sad," stated Campbell.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Lauren Shelton's wife told investigators she left her husband and their son, Alexander at home watching television.  When she returned 45 minutes later from running an errand, she found her husband dead on the sofa.

Alexander Shelton was missing and so was his 2007 Nissan Altima.  The Tennessee Highway Patrol later arrested him in Jackson, Tennessee after pulling him over for a traffic violation.  Shelton then confessed to the crime by telling authorities, "I just killed my dad."

"It's ironic, but tragic anytime it happens, I guess," Campbell said.

So far authorities are not saying how Lauren Shelton died and have yet to determine a motive for the murder.

"Our hearts go out to them and we'll keep them in our prayers for sure," Campbell stated.

Our attempts to contact someone at the Shelton home this afternoon for comment went unanswered.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
