(WMC TV) - Consumer Reports recommended the following websites for researching out-of-network medical costs. They tabulate procedure costs by zip code.
* HealthCareBlueBook.com (www.healthcarebluebook.com)
* FairHealthConsumer.org (www.fairhealthconsumer.org)
CR suggested using information from these sites to negotiate with your out-of-network provider. Also, enlist your employer and state insurance department/commission to advocate for you.
Request your explanation of benefits (EOB) before paying any bills out-of-network. CR said the initial bill for an out-of-network medical procedure may reflect the list price of the procedure. Your EOB should reveal what you really owe.
