(WMC-TV) – A motive has yet to be revealed in the case of a son charged with murdering his own father.
Alexander Shelton is charged with first degree murder after his father, Lauren Shelton, was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the living room at their home on Paper Birch Cove in Germantown.
Lauren was a certified public accountant. His son was identified as a suspect and arrested in Jackson, Mississippi.
Dr. John McCoy is a clinical and forensic psychologist with 40 years of experience. He said the situation is highly unusual.
"It's not unheard of but it's just, you just don't see it," said Dr. McCoy.
He explained that each case is different and, in general, a child who kills their father did it either for some secondary gain or because they are delusional. He said neither of those excuses qualifies as a defense.
"They can be severely mentally ill, but as long as they've got that little piece of reality that they know that it was wrong then they're still responsible under the law," said Dr. McCoy.
Alexander Shelton is due back in court on July 9.
