(WMC-TV) – A former Kirby High School math teacher is charged with statutory rape after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Officers received information that the pair may have had an inappropriate relationship in January. An investigation was opened, but police weren't able to confirm that a crime had been committed.
However, in April, the officer assigned to Kirby High School received new information that allegedly confirmed the relationship between 26-year-old Justin Bolden and the student.
According to a police affidavit, in October 2011 Bolden asked a student for her cell phone number and immediately began texting and calling her.
Over Christmas break, police say Bolden picked her up at a friend's house, took her home, and had sex with her.
Bolden resigned from Memphis City Schools.
When a warrant was issued for his arrest Monday, he turned himself in.
"I wouldn't think he'd do something like that. He seemed like a cool teacher," said Kirby High School student Cedric Crawford.
In November 2011, Bolden won the Golden Apple Teacher Award for high school math.
He is charged with statutory rape by an authority figure and has since been released on $10,000 bond.
Bolden is due back in court July 3.
