Summer camp teaches kids about storms and the aftermath

(WMC-TV) – It may be summer break for students, but some are using their time off to learn more about the seasons and the storms and destruction that come with them.

The theme of this year's Shelby Scholars Summer Institute is "After the Storm: Recovering and Establishing Order after a Weather-related Natural Disaster".

Hundreds of students from across Shelby County and coming together on the University of Memphis campus to learn about natural disasters and the lasting effects when one hits.

This year, with the help of the U.S. Navy, Memphis City Schools, University of Memphis, and Lego Robots, kids will learn about medical response, search and rescue efforts, applying first aid, and more.

The SSSI camp is meant to get students excited about math and science in a way that is unique from the classroom setting they are used to during the school year.

This is the 6th year for the camp. It runs through June 29.
