(WMC-TV) – An inmate locked up in the Crittenden County Jail went to the doctor with what he called a spider bite. It was actually a gunshot wound he received while behind bars.
Robert Turner, Jr. is awaiting trial on an aggravated robbery charge. He is accused of shooting someone during a 2011 home invasion.
He is locked up in the Crittenden County Jail, where he was shot in the knee on Saturday.
Crittenden County Chief Deputy Mike Callender said Robert shot himself with a small Raven 25-caliber pistol that was likely smuggled in by at least one of the three former jailers who were arrested one week ago for smuggling items into the jail.
"The case that we built against the jailers involved the cell phones, the cigarettes, stuff like that. Nobody asked about a gun. There was no indication anybody had a gun," said Chief Callender. "It was back there. We just didn't ask the right questions, obviously."
Callender said they are trying to correct the problem.
Robert Turner, Jr. was not seriously hurt and he is already back in his cell. Investigators say charges are pending against both him and the former jailer who smuggled in the gun.
