Oxford celebrates 175 years

(WMC-TV) - Oxford, Mississippi, is celebrating its 175th year and folks there are gearing up for a big party on Saturday.

Ole Miss is even getting in on the fun as new Athletic Director Ross Bjork is just one of several who will be in a dunking booth that will benefit the Boys and Girls club.

The downtown square has certainly seen some changes over the years, but local businesses credit city organizations for preserving the culture.

The Oxford Downtown Council was started about 30 years ago by a group of local businessman that saw the square was really going to hold its own, and the state of Mississippi actually looks to Oxford as one of its' great gems that we've preserved," said local business owner Jeff Johnson.

Other family events include a petting zoo, street vendors, and double decker bus tours.
