Child on life support after near drowning

(WMC-TV) - Two year old, Layla Lykens is being treated at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital after she was found floating in a swimming pool near her home in Southaven, Tuesday.

The little girl's fraternal grandmother, Krystal Lykens said Layla has no brain activity.

How she made it into the pool is a big mystery.

Krystal Lykens said she's been told that the girl was left at home with her sleeping mom by an aunt.

An hour later when the aunt returned, the mom was still sleeping and Layla was floating in the pool.

A law enforcement source within Southaven police told Action News 5 that the Mississippi Department of Human Services is investigating reports that the child was not properly supervised.

"I've heard stories," said Krystal Lykens. "I'm not sure exactly what happened but I really would like to know because if neglect was involved I want that person to be punished."

Lykens also said she's holding out hope that her granddaughter will improve.

She says doctors plan to do more tests later to see if there is brain activity.

This case remains under investigation.
