(WMC-TV) - Investigators don't know who he is or where he's from but the man who pulled a strange con in several Arlington offices could end up at 201 Poplar.

Lana Smith has worked at the front desk of Exhibit A Incorporated for decades. But a recent run-in she had with a con-artist has left her on alert.

"We've been out here since 1991 and we've never had anything like that happen," said Lana Smith, whose purse was stolen while she worked.

In late May, a man walked into her main office. He played off context clues and convinced the staff that he was the out-of-town visitor they had been expecting.

"And he just looked like an average, an average guy. And said all the right things and nothing to give us any clues that he was not who he said he was," said Smith.

By the time he left the building, investigators say he stole a company laptop and Smith's purse.

"He charged over $2000 on my credit cards," she said.

Little did she know at the time, the same man had already made stops at three other Arlington offices nearby.

Police say he swiped a nurse's wallet and soon ditched it in the toilet tank at a local chiropractic clinic.

"Somehow, he talked his way into private areas of their facilities," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chip Washington.

Investigators describe it as a bizarre sequence of events. For the crimes, the man caught in surveillance photos faces four counts of robbery.

"Hopefully we can stop him so he won't have to worry about doing this again," said Washington.

If you can help identify him, investigators ask you call the sheriff's office or Crime Stoppers.
