(WMC-TV) – A carjacking suspect was shot and killed by Memphis police. Now, his identity has been released and the officer who shot him is on paid leave.
The carjacking happened Friday.
According to police, Hernandez Dowdy, 36, was driving the car that had been reported stolen. The GPS on the vehicle said it was at 3407 Wingate Cove.
When officers arrived, they say Dowdy drove away and refused to pull over.
As he was fleeing, he hit. Dowdy eventually, he stopped and ran away.
Police chased him on foot. That's when they say he reached toward his waistband and said he had a gun.
In response, a Memphis police officer shot him.
Dowdy was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.
The officer who fired the shot that killed Dowdy has not been identified. He is on paid leave as the incident is investigated.
