MLGW programs help past due customers survive extreme heat

(WMC-TV) – When our temperature hits triple digits, it is not a good time to be without power.

Keeping people safe in the extreme heat is a top priority for Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, even if you are having trouble paying your bill.

For the third year in a row, MLGW is offering a weather-related reconnection program for those who are currently without power due to not paying their bill or failing to complete the company's identification process.

Regardless of how much you owe, you can pay $250 plus a reconnection fee and have your power reconnected. If you do choose to take advantage of this program, you will be required to enter into a deferred payment plan for the past due balance you owe.

"The summer heat in Shelby County can be life-threatening," said MLGW President and CEO Jerry Collins Jr. in a written statement. "This is an effort to help bring some relief to those customers who are currently without power."

That is not the only way MLGW is trying to help people who are having trouble paying their bills.

When the heat index reaches 95, power will not be shut off to elderly or disabled people who have past due bills. When the heat index reaches 100, they will not turn off power to anyone who has failed to pay their balance.

The reconnection program will be available through the current heat wave.
