(WMC-TV) - Community leaders are organizing a prayer vigil Saturday in an effort to end the gang violence in Whitehaven.
"These children didn't get in this condition overnight and it can't be solved overnight, but it can be solved," said Herb Jackson, of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Solving the gang problem in Memphis is a tough task.
Recently, a cell phone camera captured the savage beating of a 16-year-old on video. The boy was attacked because he wanted to leave a gang, according to police.
Jackson, a radio personality, spoke on behalf of the SCLC outside the Monterro Park Apartments, an area where some of the violence has taken place.
The group will also spread the word about the Memphis Gang Hotline. It's a tool for parents and teens who want gangs out of their lives and neighborhoods.
"We're manning this line from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, but you can always leave a message here and calls will be returned within the hour," said Jackson.
The prayer vigil is set for 9:30 Saturday morning at the corner of Winchester and Millbranch and it is open to anyone.
The SCLC is looking for corporate and business sponsors for this event. To help stop the gang violence, call the Memphis chapter of the SCLC at 901-488-4798.
