(WMC-TV) - On this 4th of July holiday, when most are spending time with family, Bonnie Hunter has a message for all parents.
"Just keep your children as close as you can," Hunter said.
Her son, Shawn Marbury, was found shot to death Monday at his home on Boyce Avenue in Memphis.
His killer is still on the loose.
Marbury's mother thinks the shooting happened early Monday morning when he returned home from delivering newspapers. A job he just started last week.
"Someone must have been laying in wait for him because when he went into his back yard to go into the house someone attacked him," Hunter said. "He got away from them but you could tell he had fought because there were marks on his face."
Marbury was able to get inside his house and shut the door behind him, but the killer shot through the glass portion of the door.
His body was found Monday at 2:47 pm. Robbery was the apparent motive.
" Shawn was the sweetest, kindest, gentlest boy any mother could ever want and he will be truly missed," Hunter said.
She says she didn't like where Marbury was living, but says he owned three houses on the street and would fix them up and rent them out.
On this holiday his mother can only think of her son and the violent way his life came to an end.
"Please help us find the person who did this," Hunter said.
