Former police officer cuts deal, avoids prison

(WMC-TV) – A former Jackson, Tenn. police officer cut a deal to keep himself out of prison, and clear his record.

Travis Hass, 29, was indicted last May for lying about who shot him.

He said he was shot by two men, but after noticing inconsistencies in his report of what happened, investigators determined Hass actually shot himself.

That's right, the former police officer shot himself four times. Once in the shoulder, once in his right thigh and twice in his bullet proof vest.

Hass later resigned from the police department.

Instead of entering a plea, Hass did what is called a pre-trial diversion.

The pre-trial diversion is an option for some first time offenders.

The deal means Hass will be on probation for two years, pay the costs of court and not violate any other state laws.
