COPY-Woman sentenced to 29 years for MTSU player death

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - A Memphis woman has been sentenced to 29 years in prison for the stabbing death of a Middle Tennessee State University basketball player.

The Tennessean reported (http://tnne.ws/O7OBqh ) Rutherford County Circuit Court Judge Don Ash on Tuesday sentenced Shanterrica Madden of Memphis to 25 years for second-degree murder and four years for tampering with evidence, with the sentences to be served consecutively.

Madden was convicted in May in the March 2, 2011, death of Tina Stewart, also from Memphis, at an off-campus apartment they shared.

At her trial, Madden acknowledged stabbing Stewart but claimed she had acted in self-defense against her larger and more athletic roommate. Prosecutors argued that Madden's action was premeditated after Stewart reported her for smoking marijuana.

The 21-year-old Stewart was a veteran on the Lady Raiders team.
