(WMC-TV) - Action News 5's Joe Birch was injured in a traffic accident in Midtown Tuesday night.
Joe's neck was broken, but according to his wife, Robin, his doctor says it is the best kind of break a patient can get.
The doctor also says there are no other tears or injuries.
Joe will not need surgery, but he will need time to recover and Robin tells us that she and his two sons will be taking good care of him.
"I feel really blessed that I didn't have a more severe injury. I could have really been seriously hurt. Thank goodness, even though this looks bad, it's not a critical injury," Joe told Ursula Madden Wednesday afternoon. "It is a neck injury, it will cause me to be on the sidelines for a little while. I'm going to be back as soon as they let me return to action."
When the accident happened, Joe was driving to a business on Union Avenue to mail a thank you gift. As he spoke with Ursula, he expressed his concern for the other driver involved in the accident.
"My heart goes out to the other young lady who was involved in this accident with me," he said. ""It was my decision that caused the accident and so I'm very concerned about the young woman."
Action News 5 viewers have been leaving well wishes and prayers on our Facebook page. He is overwhelmed by all of the support he has seen since the accident.
"This is really a great city in many ways. People in our community do have a warm heart and do really love each other despite the fact that we don't act like it sometimes," he said. "There's really strong evidence, just in this brief experience that happened just last evening, that people really do care about people in our community and that's what we really need to focus on."
Robin said that Joe had never been involved in a car accident before this one.
