(WMC-TV) – Police are still looking for two men who attempted to abduct a 10-year-old girl in Cordova Wednesday evening.
Investigators say the little girl did everything right to save herself.
She had just left her friend's house near the corner of Amberly Way and Chatman Cove. While making the short walk home, two strangers drove up alongside her.
"Passenger jumped out wearing dark clothing, a dark jumpsuit with a mask and tried to abduct the child," explained Shelby County Sheriff Spokesman Chip Washington.
The kidnapping attempt failed.
"She fought. She fought hard. She screamed loud," said Washington. "This 10-year-old child had the wherewithal to scream, holler, and kick, do everything she could to get away from this individual."
Washington said the girl then ran home to her mother, who alerted deputies.
"We sent the cavalry out because this is not something that happens in this county," Washington said.
Investigators say the men were driving a white work van. There was a dark, tinted window on each back door.
The girl's parents say they have no idea who might want to take their daughter, but they are frightened because the girl said the men threatened to come back for her.
Meanwhile, sheriff's deputies remain visible in the neighborhood.
"I mean, this is a mystery," said Washington. "There are more questions than answers at this time and we're going to continue to investigate."
