(WMC-TV) – Tragic news this morning. Police in Aurora, Colorado are investigating a mass shooting at a mall movie theater. And now the shooter's identity has been released.
James Holmes, 24, of North Aurora is said to be the shooter.
It was initially reported that Holmes' car has Tenn. tags, but we have discovered that is not correct.
Movie goers were at a theatre to see the new Batman film "Dark Knight Rises," when the unthinkable happened.
Holmes fired into the audience hitting many people.
At this time, at least 12 people are dead, and dozens of people are hurt. This includes children and teens. One of them was a three-year-old.
The news of the shooting has shocked people all over the country, including the President and First Lady. The POTUS released the following statement:
"Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come."
According to CNN, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said the shooter used some kind of "smoke device" in the theatre right before the shooting. But officers have now confirmed that it was an actually an explosive device.
Witnesses say the shooter kicked in an emergency door, and then tossed a "smoke bomb" into the theatre before unloading into the crowd.
The crowd was initially confused about what was going on. One witness told CNN that many people thought the sound of gunshots were coming from the movie.
Police caught the Holmes in the parking lot of the theatre and discovered that he was wearing a bullet proof vest. They also seized a handgun and a rifle. They later found a third gun in the theatre.
The gunman is now in custody, and police say he did not resist arrest.
Also, there is no evidence at this time that suggests there was a second shooter involved.
