Community Steps Up To Plate For Tiger Bat Boy In Need

(WMC-TV) - Stan Bronson celebrated his 84th birthday in royal fashion Thursday.

"It's 7th heaven for him. He is truly the king that he is portraying in there"

Bronson is the unofficial Tiger "mascot," and has been a mainstay around the University of Memphis campus for more than 50 years.

Most notably, he has served as the baseball team's bat boy since 1958, a streak that landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records 5 years ago.

"Well, it gives me something to do," Bronson said.

"I've always called him the cornerstone of Memphis Tiger baseball, and that's what he is," Tiger Baseball Coach Daron Schoenrock said.

Bronson, who is mentally challenged from a trauma at birth, has never asked for anything in return. He has volunteered his time and never received a pay check for his work.

"Not a penny's worth of anything in it," said Bronson's friend Beverley Dunn, who also helped organize his birthday party. "Just his good humor and positive attitude."

But a positive attitude alone can't pay the bills.

Bronson has no health insurance, and is ineligible for many welfare programs including social security benefits.

"Stan's situation is unique," Schoenrock said.

So the folks at Bronson's assisted living home Wesley Highland Terrace, stepped up to the plate and decided to turn his birthday bash into a fundraiser to help with Bronson's medical costs.

"Hopefully this will secure Stan's future as far as health care is concerned," Dunn said.

"They love me cause I put my mind to it," Bronson said.

Checks can be sent to Stan Bronson, Wesley Highland Terrace, 366 S. Highland, Apt. 906, Memphis, Tenn., 38111. Donations can also be made via Facebook at

Donations will be deposited in an account at Sun Trust Bank for Bronson and managed by Bronson's relatives.
