(WMC-TV) - The eve of an election is a great time for someone like me to urge people to do their civic duty.
Many brave people fought to insure that we do have the right to vote. So, I do urge Tennesseans to exercise their right to vote in elections next Tuesday, and it's true that those of us who live in Shelby County need all the encouragement we can get.
Many residents in Shelby County suburbs were excited to be voting in an election regarding the establishment of suburban school districts, but they vote now knowing that a federal judge may throw it out as unconstitutional.
About 1,000 Shelby County residents voted early only to find out that they received the wrong ballots, and there is no way for them to re-cast their votes using the correct ballots. And lastly, we have another judge weighing in that a photo ID card issued by the Memphis city library system is not adequate proof of ID to vote, adding more confusion to that part of the process.
People deserve a clear, confident path to participate in our democracy. Our leaders need to take reasonable steps to insure they are not causing people to feel more disenfranchised than they already do.
