(WMC-TV) - A former Arlington High School teacher pleaded guilty to having sex with two of her students.
At first, she faced the possibility of more than two decades behind bars. But after pleading guilty, she may be there for less than 1.5 years. That's if she serves any time at all.
Stacy Hopkins was arrested in September 2011.
The Arlington High School coach and physical education teacher was charged with statutory rape by an authority figure for having sex with three teenage students.
In criminal court, prosecutors dropped one of the charges against her after defense attorneys argued the alleged victim was actually 18 years old.
In a deal with the state, Hopkins pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated statutory rape, a lesser felony.
According to court records, the plea deal calls for two consecutive two year prison sentences to be served at 30 percent.
A judge will ultimately decide the sentence in late August.
Action News 5's Nick Kenney spoke with Hopkins' attorney by phone. She said she will ask the judge to keep Hopkins out of jail and that she serve probation instead.
Regardless of how much time she serves, Hopkins will be required to register with the state's sex offender database.
She is currently free on bond.
