Shoppers hit stores for Miss. tax-free weekend

(WMC-TV) - Shoppers in Mississippi will get a 7 percent tax break on clothing and footwear this weekend. The tax free holiday is designed to coincide with back-to-school shopping. But, there is a catch.

On Friday and Saturday, clothing and shoes under $100 are tax free. People are already pounding the pavement for bargains.

Stores off the beaten path like Janie Rose Boutique are doing everything they can on social media sites to get the word out.

"I've really been hitting the Facebook and Instagram hard the past couple of days letting everybody know, no sales tax," said Janie Rose Boutique Manager Jessica Russell.

Russell says just about everything inside her store qualifies for the tax-free weekend and says extra help is on hand for the expected rush.

"It's a great time for back to school or get some transition stuff for the fall or last minute summer stuff," said Russell.

Going back to school seemed to be everyone's reason for carrying stuffed bags out of the store.

"If you have more than one child attending school, you save a lot on that," said Joyce Reed, who is a parent.

But for some parents, the hard part is making sure what the kiddos want is affordable.

"You can't buy some things that you'd like to have but I just ask my kids to be reasonable and take it easy on Dad," said shopper John Schmidt.
