Supervisors to look at gun prohibition

GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Leflore County supervisors have asked their attorney to determine if they can prohibit guns in the county parks.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that Sheriff Ricky Banks asked the board for the prohibition because of shootings in the parks.

The supervisors earlier this month asked board attorney Joyce Childs to prepare a proposal for them to look at in August.

Chiles says the proposal would say no "unauthorized firearms" would be allowed in parks. Signs would be posted at each park informing visitors of the rule.

State law allows concealed weapon permit holders to carry their weapons in parks and other places previously banned if they get additional certification.

Childs says she needs to clarify what would be legal under state law.
