(WMC-TV) – The Frayser community is distraught after dozens of children witnessed a shooting in broad daylight.
Witnesses say the shooting at the Forest Park Apartments Tuesday happened after about 40 children finished a neighborhood breakfast in the apartment complex's community room.
The victim is in the hospital. The suspect is still on the run. And parents say their children are scarred for life.
"They had just finished serving the kids breakfast and we had over 40 kids around," said Kay Evans, who lives in the apartment complex.
Evans and the apartment complex's resident manager Char Covington said the children saw the whole thing.
"Even my own son was like, 'Mom, I saw everything' and I'm like, 'Oh my God,'" said Covington.
Police cannot say what led to the shooting, but neighbors say the suspect had another run-in right before the shooting.
"He had tried to rob somebody else prior to shooting this other person," said Covington.
Witnesses say the victim was just going about his daily business.
"He went to the store and was on his way back from getting whatever he wanted," Covington explained.
Evans says the vision of her injured neighbor is etched in her mind.
"When I came outside, he was calling for his cousin and crawling," she described.
Covington saw the suspect flee the scene in a truck after the shooting.
Responders then rushed the victim to The MED.
Now, the witnesses are just glad none of the children were hurt and they asked for more area patrols.
Police have not confirmed the name of the victim. He was last listed in critical condition
Witnesses say they did not recognize the suspect as a Forest Park Apartments tenant.
