Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: Two Extremes - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: Two Extremes, plus scores

(WMC TV) - This week's High Score and Low Score couldn't have been farther apart if they were at the North and South Poles.

McDonald's, 6668 Winchester Road, failed its latest Memphis-Shelby County Department of Health inspection with a 61. The inspector's report cited 10 critical violations among six critical categories.

The violations include:

"employee putting on gloves on top of gloves without washing hands first"

"employee came from handling trash to washing dishes without washing hands first"

"large amounts of fruit flies"

"waste water leak from drain line on to floor"

"spray bottle with degreaser stored next to tea in filters"

"temp of cream cheese (at unsafe temp)"

After making eight phone calls to Byrd Management Group, LTD, franchisee of this particular McDonald's, and reaching a full voice mailbox each time, I visited the establishment to drop off my business card.

The place was not clean. An employee was mopping the floor, but the cleaning solution stank like a fraternity house after a band party.

Apparently, my business card got the attention of April Jones, a marketing representative for all of the area's McDonald's restaurants. She issued this statement in the name of Jim Byrd:

"Operating clean, safe restaurants is a top priority for my organization. Sanitation and food safety standards at one of my restaurants were brought into question recently by the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department.

"Rest assured, we take these matters seriously. We have taken action to address current concerns, and put the necessary steps in place to ensure these violations do not happen again. All critical items noted on the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department visit have been corrected.

"I will continue to work with my employees and the Health Department to ensure the continued operation of safe, clean restaurants."

On the Scorecard's flip-side, Gigi's Cupcakes, 9077 Poplar Ave. in Germantown, TN, earned a perfect 100 on its July 26 Memphis-Shelby County Department of Health inspection.

It's the Germantown location's first High Score of the Week, but it's the third time a Gigi's Cupcakes store rated the high score.

It's also the second time the gourmet cupcake chain achieved a perfect inspection.

"We strive for not only our cupcakes looking good and tasting good, but also food safety is a number one priority for us," said Germantown's Gigi's Cupcakes Manager Leslie Hunt.
