Southbrook mall could become new tourism draw

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Developers have wanted to renovate the Southbrook mall for a long time, and they say this is their best chance for a comeback - while helping out the community.

And this morning, developers are asking for help from the city.

According to the Commercial Appeal, S and W Associates Incorporated, the owners of the mall, want the 285,000 square foot facility to also be a tourism draw.

You may remember back in June when mall owners proposed that the city chip in $6.8 million in tax payer money to help with an estimated $10 million in renovation costs.

During a meeting with city leaders Tuesday, the group presented a feasibility study for Southbrook.

The study shows the renovated project would support over 500 jobs and produce $2 Million per year in state and local tax revenue.

Other plans include making the Libertyland carousel a centerpiece, lining the walls with old photos of Main at Beale, moving in shops and diners, and having a theater that would show Elvis Tribute movies.

Mall owners hope to present the proposal to the full City Council later this month.
