MY TURN: A willingness to serve

(WMC-TV) - We can probably never say thank you enough to the police and other law enforcement officers who work to protect us on a daily basis.

We received another stark reminder of that message again this week when police and prosecutors in Arkansas released video of the night Trumann Police Officer Jonathan Schmidt was killed.

The video makes it clear for all of us just how dangerous these law enforcement jobs are.

Police officers already know this, but even so, the Trumann police chief says they'll use this video to train his team to do a better job in every situation. The night Officer Schmidt died, this father of three young children had no reason to suspect that a simple traffic stop would end in his merciless killing. His death occurred more than a year ago, but interviews with his family members this week remind us again what a price he paid to try to keep Trumann safe.

The same can be said of police men and women in every community. I know this is a job for which they are compensated, but it's also a gift that we may never be able to repay.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
