(WMC-TV) - Relatives are grieving after a Memphis man was killed while riding his bike home from work.

The accident happened on the Hernando DeSoto Bridge.

Pierre McReynolds' family says he died while trying to provide for his family. And he knew that riding a bike across the bridge could be dangerous.

"Yes sir he was concerned about it but he said, ‘I don't have a choice, he said I don't want to go on welfare," said McReynold's cousin, Alvin Swiney.

Swiney said McReynolds worked at the McDonald's in West Memphis. He said the 47-year-old did not have a car. He had to start riding his bike back and forth across the bridge when MATA discontinued weekend bus access.

Relatives say McReynolds had just left work and was pedaling home when he was hit around 5 a.m. Sunday.

"The truck was coming over the hill and didn't see him in time and just ran over him but there have been numerous deaths in that same spot," said Swiney.

McReynolds' Facebook page shares the story of a Memphis man who started cooking at Cozy Corner BBQ when he was just 13 years old.

He went on to cook at restaurants on Beale Street and other locations around town.

Working at McDonalds was supposed to be a way for McReynolds to move into management.

But instead of celebrating a move up, McReynolds relatives are planning his funeral.

"It's a shock because this man was at the prime of his life," said his cousin.

The driver of the truck was not injured. It is unclear if he will be cited.
