MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a Memphis taxi cab driver.
According to a police affidavit, 50-year-old Kevin Grills picked up a passenger near Vance Avenue and Lauderdale Street. Investigators say that passenger was Timothy Aldridge.
As Grills was driving, police say Aldridge fired shots into his back with a handgun. Grills crashed the taxi into a fire hydrant. That's when police believe the suspect climbed out of the back seat, went through the cab driver's pockets, and left.
Surveillance video from inside the taxi cab captured the series of events. It is being used in the police investigation.
When police arrived on the scene Wednesday, they found Grills slumped over his steering wheel. He was taken to The MED where he later died as a result of the shooting.
A witness has come forward. She told police Aldridge confessed to her that he had "killed the cab driver".
Grills was driven a taxi for Yellow Cab. The company released the following statement about Grill's death Thursday:
"We are very shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of Yellow Cab driver Kevin Grills. Kevin worked with us for several years and will be missed by his family, his colleagues and his passengers.
We fully cooperated with the Memphis Police Department and we are glad to report that a suspect has been arrested.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin's loved ones and we appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the citizens of Memphis. Our company, employees and drivers are making a contribution in Kevin's name to Crime Stoppers."
Aldridge is charged with first degree murder in the perpetration of a felony.
