New Tupelo park: nature, cross-country, Elvis

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Tupelo's new nature trail passes by a pond where - according to legend - the young Elvis Presley and his friends once skinny-dipped. Mayor Jack Reed Jr. says the Tupelo Garden Club plans to make an overlook there, to bring in Elvis tourism.

For now, the Music Bend Nature Trail is also a 4-kilometer and 5-kilometer cross-country running track.

The trail begins on Veterans Boulevard next to Tupelo's dog park.

The city allotted $50,000 for the park, its 20th. So far, $25,000 has been spent on initial construction.

Fans who visit to daydream about Elvis the star would be thinking of the wrong era. His first movie was made after he got out of the Army. The Presleys left Tupelo for Memphis when Elvis was 13.
