SCS commissioner wants Aitken in charge of unified schools

(WMC-TV) – For the second time in two months, a Shelby County School Board commissioner is pushing for Shelby County Superintendent John Aitken to take over leadership of both Memphis City and Shelby County Schools before next year's merger.

Commissioner Betty Mallott says she wants to know that transition work for the Unified school district is being done.

And Tuesday, she plans to ask the Unified School Board to transfer the powers of Memphis City Schools to Aitken, even though City Superintendent Doctor Kriner Cash is still in the picture.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Mallott wants Aitken to oversee the managerial decision making.

That includes creating the first budget for the unified district, developing a business plan, and integrating IT, curriculum, and enrollment projections.

Mallott made this same proposal to transfer authority from Cash to Aitken back in June.

That motion was withdrawn last month. Mallott says her suggestion makes sense because Aitken is under contract until 2015, while Cash's contract expires in less than a year.

Still, some of her colleagues are not as supportive of the measure this time, noting that plans are already underway for a superintendent search. And both Cash and Aitken have a transition team in place to handle the details of the merger.
