MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A son has been indicted for allegedly scamming his way into a teaching job just a month after his father was indicted for heading up a group that investigators say took tests for aspiring teachers.
Clarence Mumford, Jr., is accused of having someone else take his PRAXIS exam. Federal prosecutors say he used those test results to become a licensed educator in Tennessee.
Last month, Clarence Mumford, Sr., was indicted on 45 counts of conspiracy after investigators say he ran a teacher certification scam that involved at least 50 teachers and aspiring teachers in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.
Investigators say the elder Mumford had been running his test-taking ring since 1995 and helped people get jobs in classrooms in both Memphis and Shelby County.
Dante Dowers was also indicted Thursday.
Dowers is accused of acting as a middleman. Prosecutors say he collected a prospective teacher's Social Security number, driver's license and more than $3,500 so that Mumford, Sr., could arrange for someone else to take a PRAXIS exam.
The superseding indictment also charges that Dante Dowers acted as a middleman for Mumford, Sr., obtaining one prospective teacher's driver's license, Social Security number and $3,580 payment for a PRAXIS examination taken in July 2010.
