(WMC-TV) - We're all human and make mistakes.

"Sometimes I say s**t I shouldn't say," said one Memphian with whom we spoke.

But most seem to agree Republican state senator Jim Summerville of Dickson, Tennessee said way too much in a recent E-mail to Democratic state representative Barbara Cooper of Memphis.

"He should have chosen his words better," said another Memphian. "Think before you talk," she added.

Sen. Summerville's wrote an E-mail to Cooper regarding issues the Legislative Black Caucus had with an education subcommittee chaired by Summerville.

"I don't give a rat's a** what the black caucus thinks," Summerville wrote in his response to Cooper.

Reaction to the response included Summerville's immediate removal from his chairmanship by fellow Republican Dolores Gresham of Somerville who called his tone and choice of words "unfortunate."

Tennessee Democratic Party chairman Chip Forrester said you should expect no less from a "tea party extremist."

The chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus said Summerville, who is an adjunct professor at Austin Peay University, should have known better.

"It's certainly an embarrassment to the state, to his constituency, and certainly to not only members of the Black Caucus.. but members of the black community," said Rep. Larry Miller of Memphis.

Action News 5's phone and E-mail messages to Sen. Summerville Thursday were not returned.
