(WMC TV) - PROJECT GREEN FORK RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH:  Miss Cordelia's, 737 Harbor Bend Rd., Harbor Town/Mud Island, Downtown Memphis, 901-526-4772, http://www.misscordelias.com/

Priding itself on being Harbor Town's "local neighborhood grocer," Miss Cordelia's opened in 1998 exclusively as a grocery store. Its twist was -- and still is -- a focus on stocking products made in Memphis and the Mid-South.

It added its market-fresh deli in 2005, much to the delight of Mud Islanders jonesing for Carnegie-style sandwiches, paninis, salads and soups.

Now Miss Cordelia's wrestles with a pleasant identity crisis.

Is it the neighborhood grocery that's also a restaurant...or is it the restaurant that's also a local-flavors grocer?

"We've achieved that balance," said Miss Cordelia's marketing and deli manager David Thornton. "A lot of people came to shop in the grocery, but then eat in the restaurant."

The restaurant/grocery's embrace of Mid-South-made foods and merchandise and its environmentally friendly policies earned its Project Green Fork certification in 2008.

Miss Cordelia's boasts a diligent composting program. It's also recycled 110 tons of cardboard.

Saving "green" by "going green."

"The more a restaurant (or) grocery store like Miss Cordelia's can save a little bit of green, then the savings get transferred on to the customer," said Project Green Fork Executive Director Margot McNeeley.

"If I lived down here, I would be here everyday," said Collierville customer Andy Tweed, who works on Mud Island. "They've got everything you need. Everything's pretty well economically priced."

WHAT ANDY LIKES: Triple Decker Diet Wrecker Sandwich (ham, turkey, bacon, American cheese, mayo, spicy mustard, pickle, lettuce and tomato on three slices of wheat toast); Tuscan Sun Panini (grilled chicken, Provolone cheese, roasted tomato, portobello mushroom and pesto mayo on ciabatta); Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Greek Salad, Mid-South products featured throughout the grocery.
